During ICRAF’s council days, the training programme was one of the principal activities, which was recognized as of high quality. The training database on group training courses, participants and individual ICRAF trainees has been developed. A series of training materials has been published in various forms. Stakeholders in Agroforestry education have been mobilized to act together on improvement of agricultural and natural resources education and training. Currently, The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) places strong emphasis on capacity building in individual training, teaching material development, and publication. However the group training and seminar are also available according the availability of funds and demand. The individual training programme is aiming at capacity building of partner research institutions, farmer and universities to develop and conduct quality Agroforestry research. The ultimate goal of individual training programme is to enable them to develop a critical mass of scientific expertise to respond to Agroforestry research needs. To achieve this goal, ICRAF SEA works with partners to develop collaborative programmes provide opportunities for their staff to excel in research and education in Agroforestry. Under this arrangement, highly competitive fellowships are made available for qualifying scientists to carry out Agroforestry research under the supervision of scientists at our collaborative research sites with on-going research topics. The programme operates through three major arrangements: degree fellowships (Master or Ph.D. degrees, or their equivalents), research fellowships (non-degree) and student attachments (undergraduates). |

The objective of individual training is to strengthen the growth and maturity of multidisciplinary research teams and their capacity to contribute to Agroforestry science. These web pages are put together to guide young scientists and students in Agroforestry who want to get hands-on experience through collaboration with ICRAF’s scientists in the tropics. Opportunities for individual training are offered at different levels and at the appropriate research and development sites in the Centre's network. Individual trainees differ in terms of their training objectives, education and professional experience, and the duration of their programme. ICRAF recognises three categories of trainees:
Condition and Mode of Application will provide you more information of the criteria for consideration, Financial conditions, and How to Apply Research topics provide you more information about on going project at Global ICRAF Student directory provides more information about current statistics of individual training program, alumni, and their views about their hands-on experiences with us. |

| Unfortunately The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is not a donor organization. In most cases, ICRAF cannot secure the funds to support students. Applicants are either self sponsored or provided themselves with alternative donor funding. A list of some possible scholarship opportunities are available . | Even though an age-old practice, Agroforestry has only become the subject of serious research and development efforts over the last decades. Because of the youth of the discipline, there is still an overall lack of people with the necessary training and skills to conduct agroforestry research and development activities. Therefore, the need to incorporate recent and ongoing advances in agroforestry into training and education curricula and to develop the required training materials is a high priority. Since the courses in 1999 (but also before) a lot of efforts are undertaken by national partners in organizing training courses. Based on recommendations made in 1998 and 1999 by various partners, the year 2000 main efforts were be mainly devoted to the development of training material and the support of training courses organized by our partners. In the future ICRAF will focus more on the organization of specialized training courses. |

These materials are meant to translate recent advances in agroforestry research in Southeast Asia to agroforestry training and education material. They will hopefully enrich and support existing or recently starting training and educational activities. The materials can freely be translated and adapted to more local needs of agroforestry training materials at universities, technical schools, NGO's, extension services, training institutes ... on condition of proper acknowledgement. A lot of institutions already made their own training materials and there are more available at ICRAF in Nairobi. We encourage the end users to revise and adapt the materials according to their needs.
