National Agriculture and Livestock Extension
Programme (NALEP)
is an effort of MoARD to harmonize approaches
in public extension services aimed at a broader
and more
“farmer-oriented” extension service
better equipped to meet the needs and demands
of the small-scale farming population. NALEP aims to support a pluralistic approach
involving all key stakeholders and gradual transition
from predominant public support to private extension. |
Vision
A pluralistic, efficient and effective professional
national agricultural
extension system which is demand driven and responding
to farmers
needs that lead to prosperity in a sustainable manner.
Goal
Enhancement of the contribution of agriculture to
social and economic
development and poverty alleviation.
Long-term purpose
Increased effectiveness of integrated extension
services to farmers
and agro-pastoralists.
NALEP contributes to the social development of the
people of Kenya through integrating gender into
the project; empowering communities and farmers
using participatory and democratic procedures; leadership
training; building of self reliance; and promotion
and observance of transparency.
Environmental protection is addressed through
sensitisation
and or creation of awareness to leaders/stakeholders
on environmental protection and environmental rights,
review and enforcement of environmental laws, and
training of staff and stakeholders on environmental
impact assessments.
Through
the formation of focal area development committees
and common interest groups, NALEP contributes to
poverty alleviation (Kenya Rural Development Strategy
and the Poverty Reduction Strategy).
Also, appropriate technical packages are
promoted through both community action plans and
farm specific action plans, with deliberate targeting
of resource poor farmers.
