World Agroforestry (ICRAF) is a centre of science and development excellence that harnesses the benefits of trees for people and the environment
Leveraging the world’s largest repository of agroforestry science and information, we develop knowledge practices, from farmers’ fields to the global sphere, to ensure food security and environmental sustainability.
ICRAF is the only institution that does globally significant agroforestry research in and for all of the developing tropics. Knowledge produced by ICRAF enables governments, development agencies and farmers to utilize the power of trees to make farming and livelihoods more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable at scales.
We are guided by the broad development challenges pursued by CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food-secure future, which include poverty reduction, increasing food and nutritional security, and improved natural resource systems and environmental services. ICRAF's work also addresses many of the issues being tackled by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically those that aim to eradicate hunger, reduce poverty, provide affordable and clean energy, protect life on land, and combat climate change.
Our Vision: An equitable world where all people have viable livelihoods supported by healthy and productive landscapes.
Our Mission: To harness the multiple benefits trees provide for agriculture, livelihoods, resilience and the future of our planet, from farmers’ fields through to continental scales.
We receive our funding from many different partners including governments, private foundations, international organizations, regional development banks and the private sector. And we collaborate with a range of scientific and development institutions.
Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, ICRAF operates six regional programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America and conducts research in more than 30 other countries around the developing world.
ICRAF (also known as World Agroforestry) operates under the authority of a legally constituted Board of Trustees, charged with overall responsibility for the work of the Centre
CIFOR-ICRAF Common Board Members
In January 2019, ICRAF effectively merged with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) which means having a common Board, and actively working towards a single leadership team and unified policies, processes and systems whilst maintaining legal personalities.
The Common Board of Trustees has been appointed and consists of members with diverse skills, covering areas such as agroforestry and forestry science, natural resource management, audit, finance and risk management, policy and governance.
The primary mandate of the Common Board of Trustees is to provide governance oversight in ensuring ICRAF and CIFOR function to the highest standards to execute their mission. In order to do this, the Common Board has delegated the day-to-day management of the Centres to the Directors General who are assisted by senior management teams that are actively working towards a single leadership team and unified policies, processes and systems.
The Common Board of Trustees is made up of the following members:

Corporate Documents
This document presents ICRAF’s financial position, corporate governance and analysis of performance in 2022.
This document presents ICRAF’s financial position, corporate governance and analysis of performance in 2021.
This report illustrates how ICRAF addressed interconnected challenges of persistent rural poverty and vulnerability; degraded landscapes, loss of ecosystem function and biodiversity; unsustainable production practices, particularly of tree commodities and climate change; and other threats to food, energy and socio-political security. In each case, we highlight key knowledge products, knowledge services, outcomes and impacts.
In addition to presenting ICRAF’s financial position, this document reports on our corporate governance and analyzes the Centre’s performance for 2019.
World Agroforestry policies effectively raise the awareness of staff with regards to certain issues, explain and provide a systematic approach to complex and emerging issues; apply a coherent, institutional wide approach; take appropriate action through best practices; provide a mechanism to hold the Centre and staff accountable for certain activities; and provide a shield against legal action. At present, we have the following policies in place.
Corporate Policies
The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (hereinafter ‘ICRAF’/‘Centre’) is an international research centre working in six regions and more than 22 countries, mostly in the developing world.
The policy is established to facilitate the development of controls which will aid in the detection and prevention of fraud.
This policy outlines the centres’ approach to preventing sexual exploitation and abuse including the principles upon which the centres will base its decision-making and actions, centres’ expectations of all who work for or represent the Centres, centres’ commitment to ensuring effective action is taken when a problem occurs.
The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) needs to gather and use certain personal data about individuals to effectively perform its work.
The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) adopts the Intellectual Assets Policy to ensure that the intellectual assets produced and acquired by ICRAF are promoted and widely disseminated, thus furthering our mission.
This policy is intended to guide ICRAF and its partners on how to prevent and mitigate the negative effects to biodiversity, ecosystems and human enterprise that could result from the introduction, both intentional and unintentional, of invasive alien tree species.
The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) also known by the brand name World Agroforestry advocates for the need to raise awareness and ensure implementation of adequate measures for the sustainable utilization and conservation of agroforestry tree species for their intrinsic biodiversity value, their existence and potential uses in transforming livelihoods and landscapes.
The aim of this guideline is to describe ICRAF’s policy on working with local knowledge, including but not restricted to what is considered indigenous and traditional knowledge, and the steps taken to ensure best practices are followed.
ICRAF adopts the Research Ethics Policy to describe the ethical principles and standards ICRAF expects staff, students and consultants working on ICRAF projects to adopt.
This policy aims to ensure that the trustworthiness of knowledge generated and disseminated by the Centre, and the extent to which it is trusted by stakeholders, is not limited by the actual or perceived threat of scientific fraud.
World Agroforestry requires that its research and the science that underpins or results from this research are of the highest quality. This Policy frames the principles and concepts that will support achievement of this goal.
To achieve the Centre’s goal to be the producer, provider and custodian of high-value data that promotes the understanding and adoption of agroforestry practices through an open and transparent system, ICRAF ensures that our research data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-usable (FAIR Data Principles).
