The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
World Agroforestry in Ethiopia is working with partners to accelerate the country’s rural transformation. Key activities include promotion of farmer-managed natural regeneration; establishment of rural resource centres which provide farmers with training, link them to suppliers and markets, and help them acquire knowledge and technologies; development of effective and efficient tree product value chains and markets; and ensuring access to quality tree germplasm.
Agroforestry has made a significant contribution to sustainable development, and it continues to be a key building block to transforming the economy of Ethiopia. For example, farmer-managed natural regeneration practices resulted in concrete positive impacts including: reduced flooding, erosion and siltation; increased availability of firewood; and reduced landscape degradation as a result of complementary sustainable livestock management practices. It also resulted in the creation of green jobs, particularly for women and youth (about 76% of whom reside in rural areas of the country).
