Since 1989 CIFOR-ICRAF has operated in Rwanda, with a focus on: agroforestry; improving governance of tree crop landscapes for resilient green economies, climate change and sustainable environmental services; soil erosion control in critical areas; land health evaluation, restoration and investment decisions; resilient productivity and profitability of agricultural systems with trees; tree productivity and diversity; promoting coffee quality through use of shade trees; improving nutrition and income through promotion of fruits and beans; improving sylvo-pastoralism; securing sufficient and high-quality seeds and seedlings; integrated water resources management; and capacity development both at the level of academia and small-scale farmers.

Key outcomes
- Informed the Rwanda Agroforestry Strategy and Plan by the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Environment (2018)
- Capacity building of more than 1 million farmers through transfer of knowledge and information on the use of agroforestry technologies and practices
- Capacity building of 5 PhD students and 120 MSc students since 1989.
