Joy M.B.Tukahirwa

Regional Research Scientist

Joy M.B.Tukahirwa is a regional research scientist based in the World Agroforestry’s African Highlands Initiative project office in Kampala, Uganda. She holds a B.Sc. degree in Environmental Science (Botany, Zoology and Geography) and Ph.D. both from Makerere University, Uganda and an M. Sc. (University of East Anglia, UK). Her Ph.D. research was on modelling soil erosion in highlands agroecosystems of South West Uganda.

 Her current roles include Principal Investigator, managing and coordinating three projects: (i) Going to Scale: Enhancing the adaptive management capacities of rural communities for sustainable land management in the highlands of eastern Africa; (ii) Capacity for sustainable land use and management in Rwanda; and (iii) Sub Saharan Challenge Programme on the proof of concept” of Integrated Agricultural Research for Development (IAR4D) in Lake Kivu Pilot Learning Site. Prior to joining ICRAF, between 2005-2006 she worked on short term consultancies with Government of Uganda   NEPAD/ UNEP project on synergetic implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements , Nile Basin Initiative on transboundary river water resources  management and FAO designing Kagera transboundary agro- ecosystem management programme; worked as a manager of a biodiversity project with the Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda (ECOTRUST) from 2001-2005 as a Principal Research Officer with National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) from 1996-2001 and a lecturer, Makerere University from 1984-1996.

Her research interests include integrated natural resources management, innovations in land management and resilience among small scale farmers. She has won several research awards as an individual including, Science Council of America, Rockefeller Foundation, and Ford Foundation as well part of the team from GEF and IDRC.
