ECA Programme Components

The following projects are being undertaken under ECA:

A) Southern & Eastern Africa Rainwater Network (SearNet)

The Southern and Eastern Africa Rainwater Network (SearNet) is a regional body set up to promote rainwater harvesting. SearNet was born during a regional workshop held in Machakos, Kenya in June 1998. Its mission is to network among its member associations within the region for the promotion of rainwater harvesting and utilization. The vision of SearNet is to improve livelihoods of the people living in these regions through the contribution of sustainable management, utilization of rainwater and encouraging community based water harvesting.

B) African Highlands Initiative (AHI)

AHI was established to address declining land productivity in the highlands of eastern and central Africa . The initiative involves more than 20 partner organizations working in benchmark sites in Ethiopia , Kenya , Madagascar and Uganda . Its focus is on restoring soil fertility in the highlands, particularly in high-potential areas that have been seriously degraded over time.

C) African Network for Agroforestry Education (ANAFE)

ANAFE's mission is to promote agroforestry education at universities and technical colleges: to produce graduates capable of developing, disseminating and implementing agroforestry practices suitable for smallholder farmers. This also helps to address natural resources management. To carry out the mission, ANAFE implements the following activities:

  • Providing postgraduate fellowships in agroforestry to support postgraduate programmes
  • Train more educators and researchers
  • Promoting and facilitating staff and student exchanges
D) Trees On-Farm Network (TOFNET)

TOFNET is one of the 16 networks of Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA). It is hosted and backstopped by ICRAF-ECA. It adds value to the regional programme by strengthening the capacity of national institutions to conduct research for development on agroforestry, and to disseminate agroforestry interventions and practices for improved productivity, profitability and sustainability of agricultural systems and environment in the region.
