The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
The Land Restoration Community of Practice consisting of Lead Farmers from Machakos, Makueni and Kitui counties of Kenya convened in January 2017 to reflect on current on-farm restoration activities as well as participate in a second round of training on data collection. These farmers are actively participating in the planned comparisons on tree planting as well as zai pit innovations. The engagement activities on 18th, 19th, 20th and 24th January 2017 were held concurrently at the Yatta, Mwala, Waita, Lower Yatta, Mtito Andei and Kalawa sites in order to reach maximum number of participants. Farmers were trained in the monitoring of the tree survival and measurement of tree height as well as the height and root collar diameter (RCD) measurements of maize grown within zai pits.
A total of one hundred and four lead farmers were engaged. These lead farmers collaborate with the project community facilitators and local extension agents to further support up to 2000 farmers on co-learning and data collection. The learning and feedback gleaned from the farmers will be fed back into the co-learning cycle so scientists can also benefit from the farmers experience and innovation.
