The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
Project Leader, Leigh Winowiecki of ICRAF, visited several field sites across Ethiopia, including Samre woreda in the Tigray region and Boset woreda in the Oromia region, alongside project team members, Jason Sircely of ILRI, and Elias Zerfu and Kiros Hadgu of ICRAF in March of 2016.
The team traveled with project partners associated with the Drylands Development Programme (drydev.org) including Relief Society of Tigray (REST) (www.rest-tigray.org.et/) and World Vision. Key contacts were made for the project and the team viewed various ongoing soil and water conservation techniques being implemented in the region. Discussions were held on the logistics for implementing the planned comparison protocols - which are being rolled out in 2016! Local authorities also joined the field visit and expressed the need for systematic soil assessments to aid in the targeting of restoration techniques and cropping recommendations.
