Agroforestry project wins WWF Switzerland award

The company, Planting Empowerment, has been awarded the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Switzerland global challenge award for its work in growing tropical hardwoods in partnership with rural communities in Panama.

The award aims to highlight the work of for-profit enterprises that are having a positive impact on the conservation of tropical forests.

Planting Empowerment is undertaking agroforestry projects using a mix of native species to provide alternative incomes to slash and burn agriculture. So far, the company has planted more than 27,500 trees and helped farmers to increase their incomes by 45%.

The other winner of the award was Runa, based in Ecuador, which is promoting the naturally caffeinated tea guayusa, grown by indigenous farmers, to US markets.
