More trees for Rwanda

Rwanda is pushing to increase tree cover in the country through agroforestry and new laws regulating forest harvesting.

Minister of Natural Resources, Stanislas Kamanzi, said the plan was to increase the current 24.5 per cent of forests to 30 per cent by 2017.

District level task forces have been established to drive the planting of trees, and the government is promoting the use of peat and biogas in schools and other institutions to replace tree-based fuels for cooking and construction.
