Elim project won the overall category for the best community LandCare project in South Africa. Environmentally; Area wide planning is well exercised at the community. They clear alien plants and Veld camps have been demarcated. The area has been designated the special management areas for game reserve. There is proper land use system for dams, water purification. They encourage all land users to use natural resources sustainably.

Sekhusele Landcare Project, South Africa
Sekhusele won the first price on the same category during the Fourth Biennial LandCare Conference held on July 2009. Environmentally, the project does rehabilitation of the degraded land by constructing gabions, planting vertiver grass, fencing of camps, and rotational grazing. They sell livestock to generate income and also help in culling down livestock which improves the grazing capacity of the land.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND COLLECTIVE ACION
Use of local knowledge and collective action in mole rat control at Areka, Ethiopia
Mole rat is the most destructive wild pest affecting home garden crops in Southern Ethiopia. It contributed to increasing food insecurity. The conventional methods of control are fumigation and baits which are costly to the resource poor farmers. The AHI Landcare team collaborated with the farmers to identify effective control measures of this pest.

Lushoto District is located in the West Usambara Mountains of northeastern Tanzania. The district is home to the Wasambaa and small numbers of Wapare and migrants from other areas of Tanzania. The pilot watershed covers an area of 6006 hectares; it spans 6 villages and a population of 13,163 in the Baga and Bumbuli Wards.
