  SExI FS-Model

The SExI forest simulator focuses on tree-tree interactions in a mixed multi-species agroforest. The high level of structural complexity of such traditional agroforestry systems defies classical forestry approaches when it comes to optimizing management practices. To cope with this complexity, farmers have adopted a tree-by-tree management approach, which is closer to gardening than to any usual tropical forestry or estate crop management model. Individual tree care and regular tending takes the form of seedlings transplanting, selective cleaning and felling, adjusted harvesting intensity.

Farmers’ approach appears to be in line with two basic tenets of biology: first, individuals are all different with behavior and physiology that result from a unique combination of genetic and environmental influence, and second, interactions are inherently local. Based on the same premises a computer model was developed to explore different management scenarios.

The model uses an object-oriented approach where each tree is represented by an instance of a generic class of tree. The simulated object trees, mimicking real trees, interact through modifying their neighbors ' environment. These modifications are mediated through two major resources: space and light. A 3D representation of a one-hectare plot of forest serves as the grounds for the simulation of this competition.

The major objective of such a model is to get a coherent dynamic representation of a complex system, where complexity refers here to the assemblage of locally interacting individuals with different properties more. The model provides insight on what are the critical processes and parameters of the dynamic of the system. It should also allow exploring prospective management scenarios, help assessing the relevance of present management techniques etc.

The SExI-FS will be applied to simulate growth of various species mixtures with rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) in the context of Jambi, West Kalimantan , South Sumatra and South Thailand under the CFC funded rubber agroforestry project. Colleagues from partner institutions are invited to a four day workshop-meeting to learn about and test the SExI-FS model. Dr. Gregoire Vincent of IRD (France) and Mr. Degi Harja of ICRAF will provide the orientation and training. Around fifteen people are expected to attend this event.

The first SexI-FS workshop was held in IRRI Sembawa Palembang on 10-13 May 2005. Participants from CFC Partners in Indonesia (ICRAF Bogor, ICRAF Muarabungo, ICRAF Sanggau , and IRRI Sembawa) were joining the workshop. The training was held in 3 days for introduction, field experiments and exploring management scenarios. The last 1 day, there was field visit to the rubber plantation of IRRI Sembawa.

The second SExI-FS workshop was held in Prince of Songkla University, Thailand from 24 to 26 August 2005 with 20 participants mostly are lecturers, students and some of colleagues of the CFC project. After the workshop the participants spent 2 days visiting rubber based and fruit based mixed systems in Satun and Pattalung provinces. From there, they were reviewing some practical issues on data acquisition methodology for model calibration to Thai context. A part from the workshops, presentation was also held in Kasetsart University, Bangkok to introduce the model to some of colleagues, lecturers and students and get a good response. It’s expected that the collaboration with the universities in Thailand will be continued and invited some of their students to visit Indonesia and see the implementation of the model in Indonesia case.

Attached in PDF file the Materials of the SexI Model (Documentation, Userguide (part1 and part2) and Callibration Procedures)

  Olympe

Olympe is a software which enables the modeling of farming systems in order to characterize them, to identify the typologies (and potentially recommendations domains) and enable prospective analysis according to price and yield evolution. There is also a module in olympe that permits the analysis at the level of farmer groups. Positive and negative externalities can be integrated. With “Olympe,” it is possible to build several scenarios according to price, climatic events or various types of risks. It is also possible to calculate impact at the regional level on various groups of farms (according to a typology). Building scenarios allows a prospective analysis.

One of the main output of such approach is to assess impact of technical alternatives or choices at the farming systems level, on the economic point of view as well as on the environmental point of view. Olympe uses data from farming systems surveys and provides key information in terms of diagnosis and, further on, in term of prospective analysis.

Dr. Eric Penot and Dr. J.M. Eschbach from CIRAD were in Indonesia on a technical support mission for the olympe software that was developed at CIRAD (with INRA and IAMM). Three days training of Olympe were held on 14 – 16 Feb 2005 at LRPI meeting room. Training participants were from SRAS-CFC project partners (PSU Thailand and IRRI Sembawa), LRPI, Centre for Agro-Socio Economic Research (CASER), Jambi University, Tanjungpura Pontianak University, and Lampung University. Some ICRAF staff members from Bogor, Jambi and Sanggau also attended the training.

The modeling tool will be used in the near future by a member of participants. According to most participants, olympe is the first software figures out the economic modeling in characterize farming system that related with their work. The draft manual of the Olympe sofware is available in Zip file.

  Data Management

On 11-14 October 2004, SRAS CFC held a training on data management. This training was to assist SRAS-CFC colleagues in managing the data from filed (social data, tree data, etc) to be stored well in metadatabase which accessable for colleaques to be analyzed. Participants (19 people) were coming from ICRAF field, SRAS-CFC partners from Sembawa, and also other local NGOs who had been ICRAF colleagues.

The training discussed about issues and problems that often occurs in the field when collecting data and also storing in the database. Good practices on data collection for various types of data (Local Ecological Knowledge, Survey data, Experimental design, and Spatial data),recording and storing, metadabase, using pivot table in Excel, using MS Access for data storing and also how to use GPS were taught in the training.
