by Andree Ekadinata, ICRAF Southeast Asia (a.ekadinata@cgiar.org)

The second workshop of Remote Sensing and GIS Forum (RSGIS Forum) was held in Jakarta Media Centre, February 15th, 2005. The workshop was attended by a total of 150 participants from RSGIS Forum members, BIOTROP, Bogor Agricultural University, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), University of Indonesia (UI), BAKOSURTANAL, BAPPENAS, Department of Defense, DITTOP TNI AD, etc. Opening speech by Hartanto from RSGIS Forum remarked several important point regarding the current status and future plans of RSGIS Forum, which are:

-   The increased of RSGIS Forum members up to more than 1000 members since the first phase activities on Aceh and North Sumatra

-   Cooperation between RSGIS Forum and Asian Development Bank (ADB) on numerous aspect including funding for workshop, producing CD which contain all data gathered by RSGIS Forum to anyone who need it, free of charge (first version of the CD has been distributed during workshop), etc.

-   Future plans of RSGIS Forum activities including web-based mapping and large scale mapping activity.

Five different topics were presented at the forum, one of it is the presentation from Sofyan Haroen who is the Walikota Kabupaten Sabang, Aceh Province. He presented the magnitude of destruction in Sabang city, where more than 200 people died and almost all coastlines destroyed. Several other interesting issues raised during the workshop are:

-   Clear statement from representation of Ministry of Defense that the Department of Defense will actively join RSGIS Forum. The same statement also came out from DITTOP TNI AD. Both of the institutions are in charge to give ‘security clearence’ on any kind of detail mapping committed in Indonesia including aerial photo etc.

-   The needs of thematic maps covering different topics to support various activity of different institution. Four groups of thematic maps is currently needed and not yet available: biophysical maps, social and agraria maps, land suitability maps (currently developed by IPB team), and infrastructure maps.

-   Suggestion to merged with BAKOSURTANAL Forum. The forum is formed by BAKOSURTANAL with similar purpose and activities to RSGIS Forum. No coordination has been committed yet between the two forum.
