Students Fellowship Program
at the World Agroforestry Centre-Southeast Asia Regional Office
Introduction
The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is one of the 15 centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the strategic alliance of members, partners and international agricultural centers that mobilizes science to benefit the poor. ICRAF derives its comparative advantage from having a strong reputation as the global leader in agroforestry. This includes a global convening role for agroforestry research, development and education, including the coordination of several global and regional networks related to agroforestry, and deep involvement and linkages with key global conventions related to sustainable development (more about ICRAF)
ICRAF’s capacity building mandate includes provision of support services to students and professionals These clienteles are classified into (a) students on attachment; (b) research interns; and (c) "on-the-job trainees". In general, all of them are referred to as ICRAF Fellows.
Students on Attachment are students who need to complete a research as thesis requirement for either an undergraduate or graduate (masteral or doctoral) degree. These students either have funding or seeking financial support for completing a research thesis. In this case, ICRAF is seen as a financier/co-financier and source of technical guidance. The period of their research work is 3 to 6 months.
Research interns are either students or professionals who wish to pursue a research work on personal and/or official purpose. This presupposes that they are bringing with them their own research funds. In this case, ICRAF is seen as a partner both administratively and technically. The period of internship could be from at least 1 month to a maximum of 1 year. A research internship leads to the submission of a research report, journal articles and other publications, follow through project proposals, and the likes.
On-the-job-trainees are students, usually at the undergraduate level, who are required to acquire some course credits for graduation. These credits are earned either by completing certain number on-the-job exposures or specific outputs related to their field of specialization as required by their respective degree programs. The period for being on-the-job is usually up to a maximum of 3 months. Students neither do not bring funds with them nor may not need any financial support from ICRAF
