Invitation to Join the Discussion List 

Dear Fellow Upland Stakeholder,

The Information Support Project for Soil Fertility and Fallow Management in the Uplands, a project of the University of the Philippines Los Baños Foundation, Inc. (UPLBFI) and the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) which is funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has recently launched the FallowNet Discussion List.  This discussion list is envisioned to be a channel of active information exchange on soil fertility and indigenous fallow management in the tropical uplands.   Through this, the project attempts to reach and bring together researchers, extensionists, educators, policymakers, development workers, non-government organizations, and upland farmers who would like to learn and share information and experiences in establishing sustainable farming systems where shifting cultivation is practiced.

One of the major activities of the Information Support Project is the development of directory of individuals interested on shifting cultivation, soil fertility, fallow management and indigenous technologies in the tropical uplands.  The core group of this directory is composed of participants in related conferences and networks (for example, the workshop on Indigenous Strategies for the Intensification of Shifting Cultivation in Southeast Asia in Bogor, Indonesia in June 1997).   Participants in other related conferences and those working for related organizations are welcome to join this discussion list.

The project has lined up a series of activities for the discussion forum:

Updating and Profiling of List Members

   1.  Update contact addresses of the discussion list members

   2.  Define specific topics of interest on soil fertility and fallow management

   3.  Describe the member’s work as it relates to soil fertility and fallow management in the uplands

Topics for Discussion

   1.      Definition and scope of discussion on soil fertility and fallow management

   2.      Information needs, sourcing and sharing on soil fertility and fallow management

   3.      Referrals to sources of related upland agricultural inputs (e.g., planting materials)

   4.      Convergence of activities of researchers and extensionists; academicians and development workers

Bulletin Board

   1. Announcements (call for papers, upcoming conferences)

   2. Related advertisement

   3. Related web sites

   4. Other postings

In addition to the chance to engage in information exchange between fellow list members, many of whom are experts in soil fertility and fallow management in the uplands, members of the discussion list are entitled to the following:

     o Poster Series

     o Field Extension Guide

      ·    Priority posting of announcements, updates, call for papers and other related activities in the newsletter and the

          project's web page

Identified participants to the different conferences and workshops related to soil fertility, fallow management and shifting cultivation were included in the FallowNet Discussion List.  If you know of colleagues who would be interested in joining FallowNet (and receiving information from us), please ask them to send us an e-mail at fallownet@yahoo.com with “JOIN FALLOWNET” in the subject heading.

The compilation of names of and information about the more than 200 individuals enlisted in this is still under construction and will be accessed at the ICRAF Bogor Web Site.  We will inform you of the availability of the web site listing the members to this electronic discussion forum the soonest time possible.
