Nowdays, watershed function and carbon sequestration are becoming important issues in providing environmental services. Some debates or questions on how to assess the hydrological function of watershed and carbon stock in a landscape have been raised among stakeholders. Rapid Hydrological Appraisal (RHA) and Rapid Carbon Stock Appraisal (RACSA) approach that developed by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is a rapid, cost-effective and integrated tool to appraise the hydrological function of watershed and carbon sequestration.    more detail

TUL-SEA New Sites in Vietnam

TUL-SEA training for Rapid Hydrological Appraisal (RHA), Rapid Carbon Stock Appraisal (RaCSA) and Participatory Landscape Assessment (PaLA) in Vietnam was conducted from 21-26 November 2008. After the training, 10 site proposal questionnaires for tools application in the field were submitted. These proposals were reviewed on technical merit and prioritised for funding. As a result, five promising sites in four provinces were supported to develop full plans for site implementation in 2009.

As part of TUL-SEA activity in developing and testing the RAFT (Rapid Appraisal of Agro-Forestry Practices and Technology), a framework that provides guidelines for the description and analysis of the ways trees are used and of use to rural livelihoods, a two-week trip from 23 November to 6 December 2008 was conducted by Endri Martini (silviculturist), Elok Mulyoutami (anthropologist) and Arif Rahmanulloh (economist) in Batang Toru Watershed area, North Sumatra, Indonesia.    more detail

In-country Training of Trainers (ToT) for PaLA, RHA and RaCSA in Vietnam

Vietnam, as one of the six Southeast Asian countries in the TUL-SEA project area, organised the first training during five days, November, 21-26 2008. The three tools that are most relevant for RUPES activities in Vietnam, namely Rapid Hydrological Appraisal (RHA), Rapid Carbon Stock Appraisal (RaCSA) and Participatory Landscape Assessment (PaLA),were selected for the first training.

Training on RABA (Rapid Agro-Biodiversity Appraisal), PaLA (Participatory Landscape Appraisal), RMA (Rapid Market Appraisal) and RaTA (Rapid land Tenure Appraisal) was organised by MOSCAT and conducted in Cagayan de Oro, Claveria from 9-13 June 2008. The participants came from Kalahan in Luzon, and Lantapan and Claveria in Mindanao. Additional staff members came from ICRAF Philippines and Vietnam, DENR Region X, LGU-Bukidnon/BENRO, MOSCAT and SUCs-PAFERN.    more detail

The Soil Science Department, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Brawijaya, Malang, East Java, Indonesia hosted the in-country ToT for Rapid Hydrological Appraisal (RHA) and Rapid Carbon Assessment (RaCSA) in Indonesia. The training was held from 24-30 March 2008 at the Brawijaya University campus, Indonesia.

In-country Training of Trainers (ToT) for RHA and RaCSA in Philippines

The first in-country TUL-SEA ToT was held in Malaybay, Philippines, on 11-15 February 2008 for “Rapid Hydrological Assessment (RHA)” and “Rapid Carbon Stocks Assessment (RaCSA)” to assist in developing schemes for payments for environmental services. The Bukidnon Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) of the provincial Government of Bukidnon, Philippines, agreed to host the in-country training.

TUL-SEA Project Inception Meeting and Regional Training in Baoshan, China

On 3-4 September 2007, in Baoshan, China, the TUL-SEA project’s purposes, planned activities and expected outputs/impact were introduced during a two-day inception meeting. Participants came from benchmark sites where ICRAF has been engaged in various types of INRM research and development support activities. Most participants were expected to join the project with plans to test, improve and adopt the tools. On the second day, each participant shared information or experiences about their sites, the INRM-related issues and on-going activities.    more detail
