INAFE’s National Seminar Highlights: Agroforestry as the Future Sustainable Land Use

Twenty-eight papers were presented during a National Seminar on “Agroforestry as the Future Sustainable Land Use” organized by the Indonesian Network for Agroforestry Education (INAFE) on 7 May 2009 in Lampung University, Bandar Lampung.

The seminar was aimed at sharing research results that would provide evidences on the benefits and potentials of agroforestry as the future sustainable land use not only in Indonesia but could be elsewhere in the world. The papers were presented in parallel sessions addressing four general concerns on agroforestry, namely: (a) agroforestry market opportunities and drivers of agroforestry land use; (b) agroforestry’s contribution to agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability; (c) tree-based rehabilitation of degraded lands and watersheds; and (d) policy options and institutional innovations for agroforestry land use.

Attended by 62 participants from INAFE member institutions, government research agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and students, the seminar was a testament that sharing knowledge from various sectors can facilitate informed decision-making to widen the application of agroforestry in helping address national concerns on livelihood, food security, poverty, and natural resource management in Indonesia.

The seminar was held back-to-back with INAFE’s 3rd General Meeting. INAFE will come up with the seminar proceedings soon
