VNAFE completes documentation of major AF practices in Vietnam

The Vietnam Network for Agroforestry Education (VNAFE) has completed the documentation of seven major agroforestry models commonly practiced in three ecological zones in Vietnam. The document is available in Vietnamese language for use in teaching among member institutions of VNAFE.  It is accessible at VNAFE’s website (http://www.socialforestry.org.vn).

The agroforestry models are as follows:

  1. Coffee – Pepper - Annual crop in Hoa Thuan Commune, Buonmathuot City, Daklak Province
  2. Cashew – Bean - Maize in Easo Commune, Eakar District, Daklak Province
  3. Natural and plantation forests - Industry trees - Annual crop - Livestock in Cu Pui Commune, Krong Bong District, Dak Lak Province
  4. Natural and Plantation Forests – Tea - Paddy in Khuon Village, Quyet Thang Commune, Thai Nguyen City
  5. Plantation Trees - Forest Trees - Annual Crop - Livestock in Bac Thanh Village, Quyet Thanh Commune, Thai Nguyen City
  6. Forest Garden in Lac Hoa Village, Lac Tanh Commune, Tanh Linh District, Binh Thuan Province
  7. VAC: Forest Garden – Fishpond - Piggery in Binh Duc Village, Binh Nham Commune, Thuan An district, Binh Duong Province

The documentation provides the following information on the models: (a) scale and location, (b) establishment history, (c) description of techniques applied with accompanying photos, (d) yield statistics and cost benefit analysis, (e) SWOT analysis including marketing issues, (f) social dimension (e.g. acceptability to farmers and potentials for wide scale adoption), and (e) environmental analysis (e.g., impacts on soil, water, and forest resources, etc.).

VNAFE carried out the documentation project through the partnership among three of its member institutions, namely: Thai Nguyen Agriculture and Forestry University, Tay Nguyen University, and NongLam University. The project was funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) in 2006 through SEANAFE.
VNAFE plans to translate the documentation in English to maximize its use and help enhance agroforesty teaching-learning process in other SEANAFE member institutions.
