The Philippine Agroforestry Education and Research Network (PAFERN) trained 26 lecturers from among its representative academic and research member institutions and one chairperson from a member non-government organization. This training of trainers is part of SEANAFE’s project (Phase 2) on Markets for Agroforestry Tree Products (MAFTPs). It was held on 29 to 31 May 2007 at the Training Center for Tropical Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability (TREES), University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) in Laguna, Philippines.

Encouraging and productive -- these words could best describe the results of SEANAFE’s 13th Board meetings in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on 6-8 February 2007.
The 13th Board meeting tackled various administrative and technical concerns of the network. Among the matters discussed were the accomplishments and updates on current SEANAFE, ANAFE, and country network activities; proposed revision on SEANAFE’s 2004 Resource Mobilization Framework, proposed guidelines for membership expansion, logistical preparations and key session topics for SEANAFE’s International Conference in October 2007, development of SEANAFE “Umbrella” Program on Agroforestry Education (similar to ANAFE’s BASIC), agenda items for the 4th SEANAFE General Meeting in Chiangmai, Thailand, SEANAFE’s 4th project theme, and preparations for SEANAFE’s mid-term project review.

On 5 February 2007,
SEANAFE held its Annual Review with the Swedish International Development
Cooperation Agency (Sida) at Bong Sen Hotel in Ho Chi Minh
City, Vietnam.
It was aimed at following up the progress of SEANAFE’s
2006 activities, determining and recommending areas for improvement, and
agreeing on future directions. The review meeting was held back to back with
the 13th SEANAFE Board meeting on 6-8 February 2007, making it
possible to present the minutes and processes to the Board members, and
incorporate their comments and suggestions as necessary in the final review
report.

SEANAFE will launch Phase 1 of its landscape agroforestry
project with a training-workshop on 22-26 March 2007 in Chiangmai,
Thailand. A total of 19 participants representing 4
country teams from 11 member institutions of SEANAFE will attend the
training-workshop.

became the first SEANAFE MS Research Fellowship grantee to complete his Master
of Science degree from Mahidol University
in Thailand.

The research was conducted on the pattern of utilization of
non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in a community forest area. It highlights traditional harvesting
practices of NTFPs by the local community, examining whether these lead to
sustainable use. The research also
provides analysis of the economic value of these activities and how the
products contribute to the economy of households. The study was carried out in Houay Hok
village, Kasy District, Vientiane Province,
Lao PDR.

A poster on SEANAFE’s Markets for Agroforestry Tree Products
Project was among the 74 posters presented during ICRAF’s Science Meeting held
on 26-28 February 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya. The poster highlights the lessons learned and
the technical trends generated by the country researches during Phase 1 of the
Project. It also depicted the project
framework and processes for generating knowledge toward curricular and teaching
materials development on marketing agroforestry tree products.

On 15 August 2006, Dr. Jesus C. Fernandez, a Filipino, took on the Capacity Building Specialist position at ICRAF-SEA office and eventually as SEANAFE’s new Technical Adviser. He replaced Mr. Per Rudebjer who is now with the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute based in Rome, Italy.
