Student-Faculty Dialogue to Improve Forestry Education in Southeast Asia -

The Southeast Asian Network for Agroforestry Education (SEANAFE) invites faculty members and students in forestry to attend the “Student-Faculty Dialogue to Improve Forestry Education in Southeast Asia” on 19 November 2008 in KU, Bangkok, Thailand.

This activity is a collaboratve undertaking with the Faculty of Forestry (FoF) of Kasetsart University (KU) as part of KU’s Second International Conference on Tropical Forestry (FORTROPII) and the ASEAN Forestry Students Association (AFSA) meeting to be held on 18-20 November 2008.

2nd World Congress of Agroforestry -

The 2nd World Congress of Agroforestry to be held in Nairobi, Kenya (August 2009) will assess opportunities to leverage scientific agroforestry in promoting sustainable land use worldwide. 

The Congress will serve as a forum for agroforestry researchers, educators, practitioners and policy makers from around the world.

Deadline for submission of paper abstracts: 30 November 2008.

The SEANAFE Board met last 22-24 August 2006 in Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines. Other than the usual discussions on the administrative concerns of the Board, the meeting also served as a venue to welcome the new and bid farewell to the outgoing Technical Advisers of SEANAFE in the persons of Dr. Jesus C. SEANAFE’s “Markets for Agroforestry Tree Products” Project turned out 5 country research reports on market chain analysis of selected agroforestry tree products, namely: bamboo from Laos, cashew nut from Indonesia and Vietnam, coconut from the Philippines, and rubber from Thailand. The research results were presented during the project’s second regional workshop held on 14-18 August 2006 in Chiangmai, Thailand which culminated the Phase 1 of the project.

SEANAFE recently awarded research fellowships on agroforestry and natural resource management to 4 MS students coming from its member countries. The ThaiNAFE plans to conduct a public forum on “Agroforestry: An Alternative to Rubber Monoculture in North and Northeastern Thailand” to be held first week of December 2006 in Chiangmai, Thailand.

The VNAFE invites everyone to visit their new website which was officially launched during its NAFEC meeting on 10 October 2006. To reach as much prospective audience within and beyond Vietnam, the website is written in both Vietnamese and English languages. It is hosted by the Department of Forest Resources Management of Tay Nguyen University and could be accessed at http://www.socialforestry.org.vn

During its Committee meeting on 13-14 October 2006 at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, INAFE’s chair, Dr. Suhardi, presented the network’s draft charter for comments and suggestions of the committee members.  The charter aims to institutionalize administration and management of the network toward ensuring a more systematic and sustainable operation.   Read More...

LaoNAFE held a workshop on 20 November 2006 at Ta Lat, Vientiane province to present the initial outputs and finalize the remaining activities of its project to produce slide teaching materials depicting agroforestry practices in the northern, central, and southern parts of Laos.  The project aims to improve the effectiveness of teaching agroforestry subjects among its academic member institutions.   Read More...

Gender balance is often asked for but not always easily achieved in male-dominated universities in SEAsia. The good news is that, on November 30, 2005, LaoNAFE elected the first female Chair person of the network: Dr Latsamy Boupha,  Lecturer at the Department of Wood Utilisation, Faculty of Forestry, National University of Laos (NUOL).  Dr Boupha has a PhD from University Putra Malaysia.   Read More...

suhardi.jpgProf. Dr. Ir. Suhardi of University Gadjah Mada (UGM) Faculty of Forestry, is the new Chair of the Indonesian Network for Agroforestry Education (INAFE). He was elected at INAFE’s 2nd National General meeting, held at UGM, Yogyakarta on 8 February, 2006. He is succeeding Dr Ma’mun Sarma of Bogor Agriculture University, who has been the INAFE Chair from 2003.   Read More...

SEANAFE’s new project ‘Markets for Agroforestry Tree Products’ is up and running. Teams from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, altogether 23 persons –more than half of them female!— attended a 6-day Regional Training and Planning Workshop in Bangkok, held the last week of November. This was the start-up of a two-year effort to develop market-oriented curricula and teaching materials for SEAsia and to train teachers in all SEANAFE member institutions to use these tools.   Read More...
