Scientists at WCA2009 suggest we look to trees for climate change solutions – including the species Faidherbia albida, which illustrates particularly well the benefits of growing trees on farms.
Already grown in about a dozen African countries, the tall, long-living, nitrogen-fixing tree sequesters carbon, while also reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, controlling soil erosion, providing fodder for livestock and wood for construction and fuel, and serving as a windbreak.
