India hosts the South Asia Research Program (SARP) of ICRAF since 2003, in New Delhi. India is unique not only in its cultural diversity but also in the diversity of its agroforestry systems. ICRAF India country office in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) jointly develops a progressive five-year work plan, with the objective of research-for-development, within the framework of India’s priorities and ICRAF’s global mandate. The jointly developed work plan is implemented with farmers and communities, in support of the national research institutions, universities, NGOs. Using an integrated approach, the projects in the country are geared to promote the development and adoption of new technologies and capacity building of the scientists and institutions.

ICRAF India office played a key role in the development and formulation of the National Agroforestry Policy of India, released in 2014 during the 3rd World Agroforestry Congress in New Delhi. ICRAF is also an implementing partner of the Sub Mission on Agroforestry with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India along with ICAR. Our work has brought the change in farmers’ perception of agroforestry--from a casual activity alongside their agricultural activities to earn some ‘pocket money’, to a full program, involving scientifically designed agroforestry systems.

ICRAF India office is being developed and promoted as a Technology Hub for the South Asian Countries. We assist them in developing country-specific agroforestry policy, technology advancement and capacity building of the scientists in the region.

ICRAF India is proud of its achievements with the support of its national partners:
