The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
At least 1 billion of the Earth’s people are always hungry. Two billion regularly are short of food. And over 30% of the entire global population suffers from deficiencies in micronutrients. There seems to be something not working optimally in our planetary food system.
On top of what seems like systemic problems in the way we produce our food, disasters caused by the climate crisis — such as droughts and floods — along with the pandemic and civil unrest are increasing threats to the existing security of our food and nutrition.
CIFOR-ICRAF, the new powerhouse of research in development for sustainable landscapes, sees in its new 10-year strategy the delivery of evidential solutions to transform how land is used and food is produced.
Two new approaches — Transformational Partnership Platforms and Engagement Landscapes — will deliver timely changes in response to global and national challenges and opportunities.
Nutriscapes!
Nutritious Landscapes or ‘Nutriscapes’, forms one of the Transformational Partnership Platforms. Nutriscapes’ ambition is to deliver solutions to the world’s biggest challenges to our food system through evidential research, new technologies, enhanced advisory services and strong partnerships.
Nutriscapes is integrating knowledge from the fields of ecology and genetics, agronomy, nutrition and economics to build a global partnership to make landscapes more resilient for people and nature.
This feature highlights Nutriscapes’ research to date from around the world as part of CIFOR-ICRAF’s ambition to build a resilient, sustainable and equitable food system.
