The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
The theme for this year’s Tree Planting Day in Rwanda is ‘Enhancing climate change resilience through agroforestry’.
All Africa reports that every year, Rwanda marks Tree Planting and Afforestation Day by dedicating a whole season to tree planting and afforestation activities. This year, the focus is on recognizing the role played by forests in the restoration of ecosystems and in enhancing climate change resilience.
By 2018, Rwanda aims to have 30 per cent of its surface area covered by forests, up from 28.8 per cent. Every year, Rwanda will plant trees on 8,150 hectares to achieve this target.
"We will plant over 30 million trees this season of which 60 per cent will be agroforestry species,” said Dr Vincent Biruta, Minister of Natural Resources.
