The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
Considerable deforestation often occurs outside forest areas, so REDD+ mechanisms need to implement full landscape accounting for equity and accuracy.
This is among several recommendations contained in a report on the Reduced Emission from All Land Use (REALU) project published by the ASB Partnership for the Tropical Forest Margins which is hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre.
The website of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) reports that the REALU project sought to combine REDD+ approaches with climate smart agriculture and landscapes in 4 countries: Cameroon, Indonesia, Peru and Viet Nam. It analyzed REDD+ through the conservation of forest carbon stocks as well as REDD+ through agroforestry intensification. By combining these, the enabling conditions for landscape scale emission reductions could be evaluated.
The project report outlines how private sector involvement will be critical to the success of REDD+ and how frameworks for REDD+ are needed at multiple levels.
