The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
During the recent Sustainability Science Congress, Cheik Mbow, Senior Scientist on Climate Change and Development with the World Agroforestry Centre, introduced participants to Future Earth.
Future Earth is a 10-year international research initiative that will involve collaboration and consultation with around 60,000 scientists worldwide. The aim is to co-design and co-implement strategies for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change in order to support transformation towards global sustainability.
Mbow presented an outline of the strategy for Future Earth to scientists from over 50 countries who attended the Congress to discuss global challenges and sustainable solutions.
Organized by the International Alliance of Research Universities, the Congress was held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 22-24 October 2014. Among the aims of the Congress was to break down academic barriers and jumpstart a broader collaboration on sustainable solutions relevant for society. As well as targeting scientists, the Congress invited participation from businesses and policy makers to provide a platform for science-policy interface relevant for global challenges
Tony Simons, Director of the World Agroforestry Centre acknowledged the wide diversity of participants at the Congress, the variety of topics presented and the opportunities given to more junior attendees to interact and participate.
