Progress at the UN climate talks on the inclusion of agriculture in formal texts have stalled, according to a post on the blog of the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature initiative.
It was hoped by many that during the 19th Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a working group specifically on agriculture would be created within the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). But while parties have agreed to exchange views and consider a report by a workshop on agriculture at the next meeting of SBSTA in June 2014, no working group will be formed yet.
Despite the difficulties, the SBSTA workshop on agriculture went ahead on 12 November with participants discussing the impact of climate change on agriculture across the globe and the potential for climate smart agricultural approaches to achieve both mitigation and adaptation.
Country representatives at the workshop shared experiences, including successful adaptation measures such as agroforestry, soil management and conservation agriculture.
Recommendations were made on how SBSTA could contribute to discussions on agriculture in the climate change negotiations, such as through developing early warning system for adverse climate impacts and examining social factors that impede local take-up of adaptation practices.
