ICRAF-South AsiaRegional Director Javed Rizvi visited the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) secretariat located in Kathmandu, Nepal, to appraise His Excellency, Mr. Arjun Bahadur Thapa, Secretary General SAARC on the long-term initiative on agroforestry dubbed, ‘SAARC Regional Coordinated Programme on Agroforestry (SARCOPA)’.
In his response, the Secretary General acknowledged the important role that agroforestry plays, particularly in the South Asia region. He was appreciative of the leadership that ICRAF had assumed in the implementation of such an important and much required programme, and reiterated his full support to SARCOPA.
ICRAF South Asia is working with eight other SAARC countries on a long-term agroforestry programme. During a meeting held on 1-3 June 2016, in Kathmandu, all eight SAARC countries endorsed the programme and it was agreed that the implementation of SARCOPA would be coordinated, facilitated and technically supported by ICRAF.
The initiative will be executed in two phases, with an initial six-year phase to establish the mechanism and delivery system for agroforestry benefits to reach the target communities, and a second six-year phase to up- and out-scale the benefits to a much wider community of beneficiaries.
