The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
Improved tree management and agroforestry in the East African drylands has enhanced resilience to drought and reduced dependence on international aid.
The website of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) reports on the release of the results of the KNOWFOR project by the World Agroforestry Centre. It shows that trees and forests help to provide food, fodder and medicine during drought as well as having longer-term adaptation benefits by maintaining more productive landscapes.
The project included a review of trees and tree ecologies in drylands and a write-shop to develop a range of communication materials including a policy brief, technical brief and factsheets. The published materials are intended to be disseminated to parliamentarians, government officials, non-governmental organizations, farmers' and pastoralists' associations and other civil society organizations.
The KNOWFOR project was implemented jointly with UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
