The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
Four regional tree seed centres and one central tree seed centre exist in Ethiopia. The centres are located in 1) Bahir Dar, Amhara, 2) Mekele, Tigray, 3) Sebeta, Oromia, 4) Hawasa, SNNPR and the central centre in Addis Ababa.
Each of the five seed centres has 20-35 staff members divided into technical and management sections.
The tasks of the centres are to procure quality seed for all tree planting activities in the respective regions and provide information and advisory services on all aspects of forest tree seed and tree improvement.
The target groups of the centres are all parties in the forestry sector within the regions concerned with tree planting and tree seed issues e.g.: Private companies,nurseries, seed dealers, farmers, organizations, communities and educational institutions.
All five tree seed centres shall be able to provide high quality advice at different levels and to transfer skills and information to and from the GoE institutions, research institutes and universities, and practice in an effective and appropriate way.
