The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
The What to Plant Where in Ethiopia portal allows users to select suitable tree species and their best matching seed sources at any planting location in Ethiopia. It further gives contact information to order the seed. The seed sources included in the tool are all from Ethiopia’s National Tree Seed Source Registry, which is developed with support from the Provision of Adequate Tree Seed Portfolio in Ethiopia (PATSPO) project.
Matching of seed sources with planting locations is based on the distance in ‘environmental space’ defined by bioclimatic, soil and topographic variables. Such matching is available for the baseline climate and CMIP6 climate change scenarios for the 2050s, including low emissions (SSP1-2.6) and high emissions (SSP3-7.0) scenarios.
The portal can be accessed in two versions:
- The version for practitioners provides a straightforward pipeline to identify the best matching seed sources after the user selects the planting location on a zoomable map and the tree species. Options for suitable species can be filtered with details on the desired products and services from the tree species.
- The version for researchers provides the same options as for the version for practitioners. In addition, users can modify the set of environmental variables to calculate the matching distance. This version also includes future habitat change projections from the climate change atlas for Africa which can further inform users about the best-suited species for the planting location.
A detailed description of data sources and methods used to develop the portal is available from the version for researchers.
