The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) joined forces in 2019, leveraging a combined 65 years’ experience in research on the role of forests and trees in solving critical global challenges.
Indonesia is the number one palm oil producing country worldwide has enjoyed the economic benefit while at the same time experiencing the environmental and social problems as the consequences of expanding oil palm cultivation, either managed by companies, including under the plasma scheme, and independent smallholders.
The Livelihoods Fund for Family Farming (L3F) in collaboration with World Agroforestry (ICRAF) Indonesia, SNV and MUSIM MAS, strives to contribute to the sustainable pathway of the oil palm industry by promoting regenerative agriculture practices in the form of oil palm agroforestry to independent smallholders in Labuhan Batu district, North Sumatra.
In particular, ICRAF plays a role in increasing independent smallholders' understanding of oil palm agroforestry and the capacity of smallholders to design and adopt oil palm agroforestry that can support smallholders' economic resilience and environmental improvement.
This activity is part of the Biodiverse and Inclusive Palm Oil Supply Chain (BIPOSC) project, which is also known among ICRAF as the SOPANS (Sustainable Oil Palm Agroforestry Concept for North Sumatra) project.
