Discussion on collaborative agroforestry research was conducted in the office of Dr Solomon Assefa, the then Director General of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) with guests from ICRAF, the World Agroforestry Centre, which also conducted similar meetings and consultations with Addis Ababa University (AAU), Mekele University (MU), CIMMYT, the World Vision Ethiopia and the Ministry of Agriculture. Then, country teams were summoned to contribute to project development at the ICRAF headquarters. As a result, this project titled as “Improving Sustainable Productivity in Farming Systems and Enhanced Livelihoods through Adoption of Evergreen Agriculture in Eastern Africa” was developed by ICRAF with contributions from the country teams [1]. The Ethiopia mission was represented by Drs Abayneh Derero (EIAR, now EEFRI), Kiros Meles (Mekele University, now ICRAF Ethiopia Office), Mekuria Argaw (AAU), Araya Alemie (MU) and Frédéric Baudron (CIMMYT Ethiopia). Then the project was launched in August 6-7, 2012 in Addis Ababa [2]. The project is a four year four country project, and it is financed by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
